The beginnings of the Roman stone collection goes way back. Interest in stones with inscription was noted from the Renaissance. Bolfini refers to the inscription that was later built in the wall of the Cathedral of Győr and has been there since. The altar stone in Bőny-örkénypuszta, the oldest piece of our collection, was described by Megyerichei János in the 16th century. The Mayor of Győr, Czech János showed stones at the beginning of the 19th century in the open-air yard called Fácánkert (Pheasant Yard). A Benedictine collection and that of the counts Viczay is also of great importance.
A taste of the exhibition
The permanent exhibition shows tombstones and sarcophaguses of soldiers serving in Arrabona. We also show altars and milestones.
