The Hungarian noblemen began to order pictures painted of their families in the 17th century. The picture-gallery of the Bezerédi family demonstrates that this tradition was an inevitable part of the nobiliary representation even in the middle of the 19th century.
Our earliest picture originating from a family picture-gallery was painted in 1746. This portrait well represents the typical feature of these galleries: for those ordering the pictures the important thing was the social message rather than the quality of the artwork. The portraits of Károly Styrum-Lyrnburg and his wife praises the work of a more learned master (from the end of the 18th century).
The portraits made of the Apponyi family belong to the group of the most prominent pieces. Their painter János Mertz (portrait and altar painter) made these works in 1780, before his studies pursued in Vienna. The scene is a noble mansion house. Gyötgy Apponyi György Antal Apponyi (father and his son) used to be the lieutenants of Tolna county.
Special importance is given to the 18th century picture made of Antal Perczel. This picture is characterized by a religious atmosphere.
In the line of the female portraits we represent the works of János Donát (1744-1830), Mihály Kovács (1819-1892) and Alajos Györgyi Giergl (1821-1863). Brides the many portraits we also exhibit two paintings (made by Gyula Benczúr (1844-1920) and Bálint Kis (1802-1868) of different topics.
