A miner officer training school started working in Selmecbánya following the order of Charles III in 1735. The manager was Sámuel Mikoviny. The school period lasted two years. The school was given the Collage status by Mary Teresa which lead to the foundation of the Acadamy of Mining where studies of miner and smelter architect could be pursued.
The language used at the Academy was German until 1868, and later the Hungarian. Forester training was added to the training of miners and smelters.
Following the Peace Treaty of Trianon the Academy moved to Sopron with all its teachers, students, and equipment.
The students of the Academy lived their lives according to strict rules teaching responsibility and solidarity. Its strongest student organization, the Circle of Students was founded in 1879 and functioned until 1950 in Sopron. The flag of the circle from 1879 is the honor of the exhibition. The traditions of the students of Selmec still live nowadays in its hereditary institution, the University of Miskolc and the University of West Hungary
