Nowadays, re-evaluation of museums in general is an important issue. The mission of museums is now to serve the public. Museums should work as a way of education. Museologists should apply tools, information and experiences in the service of the audience. The traditional space of museums should also turn into a user friendly one.
Visual art education provides the greatest opportunity to help development of personality, creativity, problem solving skills and creative approach. This educational potential and visual art education are mostly untapped.
Infinite information pouring through TV and the Internet, the discoordination of receiving experiences calls for alternative ways of gaining experiences and structure those. Museum pedagogy provides all these.
Visual revulsion in social sciences shows that visuality is ever so increasing in the world and in experiencing the world. Children are extremely defenceless to visual methods. Contemporary fine art and medium is in familiar terms with methods of contemporary visuality while these also reflect on its characteristics. Functions of contemporary fine art reform. They do not simply aim to provide aesthetic experiences and beauty but take intensive part in the interpretation of the world. The four-year-old Miskolc Museum Pedagogy Studio learned that children are very receptive to contemporary art as what they gain through it is new dimensions of experiencing the world. This is why the studio feels that passing on innovative potentials in contemporary art to children, teachers, parents and all interested are their task.
The objective when realizing the "Great Stunt" was to come up with an educational museum and operate it. In the educational museum located in the "Petro House" of Miskolc Gallery a new exhibition showing artworks selected on pedagogical bases opens. The museum is an opportunity for school groups and creative studios to educate children outside schools. The showing changes every six months.
The objective of the program is to run a museum where children’s creative work is organic part of the display, where contemplation and creation are not on two ends of a scale and where the artwork is the medium of the artist. The artworks by the children remain in the installation room, they create a mutual relationship with them.
Further objective is to come up with an open museum pedagogy medium in which institutions operating on varied levels and fields of education co-operate effectively. Thus, cooperation turns into practice where constructive pedagogical can operate in the medium of mutual needs, interaction, knowledge and experience.
The arts department of the Szemere Bertalan Secondary School and the Miskolc Museum Pedagogy Studio together work on a sample project named ‘School Friendly Museum - Museum Friendly School. The project also contributes to education in country schools, talks to teachers, urges them to visit museums and helps in doing so.
With the opening of "Big Stunt" hopefully the practice will become popular and school children will not only visit museums to contemplate artworks but be active participants.
The educational museum can thus be also a place where various levels of intellectuality meet. Teachers who brought their students to the programme, as well as the students who meet contemporary artworks in a familiar environment and visitors who can experience contemporary artworks and the interpretation of children find themselves in an interactive medium of mutual experience and exchange of information. The act of interpretation, the open mind of the children turn into a vehicle between contemporary art and the adult world.
We hope that a spiritual halo will soon form of museum pedagosists, art teachers and artists. We expect that the more and more children will understand contemporary art, and the number of patrons and those interpreting art will also increase.
We also anticipate an internet site where photos of children participating at the programme can be view along their artworks and where a forum is also in operation. The program can be followed up at the following website: - www.mimumu.atw.hu. Children like watching themselves on sites while anybody interested can keep up with what is going on in the museums.
