Mihály Munkácsy discovered the perfect model for the painting Conquest of the Magyars in Szeged. He noticed a young girl at the opening night of the Downtown Casino, Olga Szeles his model for the painting. The exhibition at the Móra Ferenc Museum entitled Munkácsy in the World presents documents and press releases related to the most important stages in Munkácsy's life.
In addition, the material that was compiled from the collection of the Somogyi Library also includes books, posters and letters. There are for example several articles from period magazines that report the first success of Munkácsy, his award winning at the Paris Salon and also articles of the painting 'Milton' which made him world-famous.
We also show various articles about Olga Szeles who was considered the most beautiful women in Szeged, who Munkácsy asked to be his model for the painting The Conquest of the Magyars the woman standing in front of the tent, holding a baby in her arms was portrayed after her. In addition, the bill for the play Strike played at the Town Theatre in 1891 is also on display. Munkácsy himself saw the play which then influenced him to paint the 'Strike'.
During his journey, he met the publisher Joseph Pulitzer welcomed Munkácsy with the Hungarian words, Éljen Munkácsy! (Cheer Munkácsy) in the paper The World. When he visited the USA again in 1868, he met the president of the USA. His life was commemorate at the Congress of the USA on the 125th anniversary of his birth. The material on display in the Dome Hall of the Palace of Culture contains articles from that time, among others.
