The exhibition where nearly all fields of visual arts are represented has been organized every years since 1954. Probably even the ‘founding fathers’ did not anticipate to launch a visual art forum that would last for half a century and which would become the most important cultural event in the life of the town of Hódmezővásárhely. It is the only place in Hungary, and are not many of them in Europe either - where contemporary artists can show, and have been able to show for fifty-seven years.

The Autumn Fair of Vásárhely is a unique blend of invitation, curating based and free entry exhibitions. The submitted works (588 artworks by 277 artists) were judges by a jury of eight that selected the works to be shown at the Great Plains Gallery's exhibition opening Sunday. The exhibition will be open until 6 December, featuring 252 works by 162 artists: 135 paintings, 50 graphics, 63 sculptures, as well as four other works with indeterminable genre are shown on the walls and postaments arranged by the museum director Imre Nagy.

The catalog's preface was written by the art historian Gabriella Gyarmati who highlights two key concepts about the Autumn Fair of Vásárhely: tradition and change. "In addition to the leitmotif in terms of tradition, pursuit of change was associated with the task of showing contemporary Hungarian art trends." - wrote in his review the art historian with the Munkácsy Mihály Museum of Békéscsaba. "Both tired and fresh art,art that puts ideas to sleep and thought-provoking art are all present at the exhibition. We also show works of art by artists of different generations. These all at the same time reflect the sense of place and time. " - explained the specialist. Gabriella Gyarmati in her writings eventually comes to the conclusion that the works should remain in focus, and they should convince the visitors of the exhibition themselves!
