The exact date of the settlement of the Jews in Sopron is unknown. However, we know that in the 13th century about 10 to 16 families lived in the New street (former Jewish street). Their street canot be called as a getto, because several Christian families lived here as well. Although the Jews who lived here were not really rich people, at the beginning of the 14th century they somehow managed to build this gothic synagoge unique to the whole of Central Europe.
