The Tabán is one of the most populated parts of Szolnok. It is situated along the River Zagyva. The name came from the Ottoman-Turkish "tabaq-xane" word which meant tawer yard. Originally, only those parts of the town were called Tabán where the tawer shops were located. Later all the poor and untended quarters were called Tabán.
