Győző Somogyi is a painter and graphic artist. He was born in 1942 in Budapest. He studied at the School of Arts and Catholic Theological College. He studied art by means of self-education. Since 1986 he has lived in Salföld, next to Lake Balaton and, leads a traditional agrarian, stock-breeder, nature-lover life. Since 1973 he has presented his graphics and paintings at more than one hundred exhibitions. His main themes are landscape of Balaton, great historical personages of hungarian history, and the Christian religion.

In this exhibition he represents the "Black Army" of King Mathias with historical fidelity and rich colours. On the paintings the Black Army's units appear: the mercenary heavy cavalry from Silesia, the light and heavy infantry, the riflemen and cross-bow soldiers.
The illustrations present the Black Army's light cavalry which was developed into a new army unit: the hussars. The pictures represent the medieval mercenary army's offensive and defensive weapons and the types of shields. The pictures of the exhibitions depict the sloops used by riverdefence, chariots as well as siege-guns. The explanatory texts of the pictures are written by the painter.
