A short description of units:

Flood basin of the River Dráva

A characteristic feature of the South Danubia region is the special world of high river banks and flood basins. The waters today were one large ‘widewater country’ in the past. We show the remaining widewater and protected rarities of flora and fauna of it. Firstly, the reeds, dead channels that once used to be rivers, as well as the yellow soil banks abundant in birds. The posters with texts inform the visitors of the past of the region, flora and insects existing in the area. Black hawthorn by the River Danube is considered a rarity, as well as the mountain species, the alnus incana or the selaginella helvetica by the River Dráva. Not just white but black strokes can be seen in the region, but white-tailed eagle that live in the unperturbed forests are not exception. Grey herons, cormorants, little egrets and black-crowned night herons nest both side of the river. Saker falcons, black kites and red kites lay eggs in the larger forests.

Villányi Mountains

The diorama shows a segment of the rich flora and fauna of the Villány Mountains. In addition to the diorama, photos and texts inform the visitors. The photos are of rare creatures such as the colchicum hungaricum to be found only in this region. Another one is the orchis simian. The fauna of this region is just as rich as the flora. Saga pedos sitting on ears or the European mantis are such rarities. The longest reptiles in Hungary, the large whip snakes, live in the Villány Mountains. Rare bird species are the curl bunting and the rock bunting. The visitors can also see short-toed eagles. Of protected mammals, wildcats live undisturbed in the forests and the caves. The deserted mines are home various bat species.

Mecsek

The Mecsek is probably the nicest mountain in the South Danube region. The climate and geology is mixed. The submediterranean, continental and Atlantic climate all together added to the variegation of flora and fauna in the region. The unit consists of mostly large mammal dissects, but typical species, from the leaves to the crown of trees are also shown. The animals can be identified by photos. Additional texts offer information to the visitors. The Italian honeysuckle and the black bryony also signs of submediterranean climate in the region. The Paeonia officinalis banatica only lives in the Mecsek in Hungary.
